What Should You Do If You Spill Red Wine on a Carpet?

Posted on

Everyone knows that dreaded feeling when you accidentally spill a large glass of red wine on your carpet. It's a scene that is often portrayed in movies or sitcoms, and it looks like such an impossible mess to clean up. However, if this happens to you, you can certainly take steps to bring your carpet back to its original state—or at least close to it. How should you proceed?

Step 1: Blotting

The first step is to blot the stain with a cloth or paper towel as soon as possible. Don't scrub the stain! You don't want anything rubbing into the fibres of your carpet, as this could make the stain worse. Instead, press firmly against the affected area and continue with this motion until you can't see any more liquid on the towel.

Step 2: Detergent Solution

Mix a small amount of dishwashing detergent with some cold water in a bowl. Apply this solution directly onto the stain with a white cloth and gently scrub with little pressure until it starts to break down. After that, use another white cloth with cold water to rinse off any remaining detergent solution by dabbing at the area until it is gone. Finally, dry off any excess moisture using paper towels or a dry white cloth.

Step 3: Vinegar Solution

If you still see traces of staining after completing the last step, then mix a cup of white vinegar with some warm water in a bowl and repeat the previous step with this new solution instead. Then, dry it off again with paper towels or a white cloth. This should help bring out any stubborn stains that may have been left behind from the detergent solution. If necessary, repeat this step until all traces of staining have vanished.
